Breastfeeding for Reducing Indigenous Infant Illnesses

A study out of Canada has captured the attention of both healthcare professionals and parents worldwide. It has revealed that by breastfeeding, aboriginal parents can significantly reduce the number of illnesses their babies suffer from. Some of these illnesses include respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, ear infections and SIDS.

A Look At The Study

The study included aboriginal Canadian mums from the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. It revealed a number of interesting statistics, including:

  • First Nations mums who breastfed their babies could reduce the number of ear infections by 11%.

  • First Nations mums could reduce the risk of SIDS by 25%.

  • Breastfeeding could reduce the number of respiratory tract infections by 26%.

  • First Nations mums who breastfed could reduce the number of gastrointestinal infections their babies suffer by 41%.

The Australian Connection To The Study

As of 2011, the aboriginal population of Canada accounted for just over 4% of their population. In Australia, our aboriginal population, as of 2011, accounted for just over 3%.

The Australian government has made it no secret that they want more mums to breastfeed their babies, regardless of their background. Not only does breastfeeding help allay the issues mentioned above, but it also provides a number of other benefits to a mum and her baby.

For Baby:

  • The baby receives optimal nutrition and protection from a number of viruses and bacteria.

  • Children who have been breastfed score higher on IQ tests than those who have been fed by other means.

  • Breast milk is always kept at the optimal temperature and is accessible and convenient.

For Mum:

  • Mums are able to develop a special connection with their bub because of breastfeeding.

  • Parents are able to save money by not having to sink hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars into formula over a baby’s first year or two of life.

  • Breastfeeding burns calories.

For Everyone:

  • Breastfeeding is better for the environment (no waste!).

  • A healthier baby means less viruses and bacteria spreading amongst children.

  • Working mums can continue to provide breast milk to her baby despite going back to work.
