A study out of Canada has captured the attention of both healthcare professionals and parents worldwide. It has revealed that by breastfeeding, aboriginal parents can significantly reduce the number of illnesses their babies suffer from. Some of these illnesses include respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, ear infections and SIDS.
The study included aboriginal Canadian mums from the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. It revealed a number of interesting statistics, including:
First Nations mums who breastfed their babies could reduce the number of ear infections by 11%.
First Nations mums could reduce the risk of SIDS by 25%.
Breastfeeding could reduce the number of respiratory tract infections by 26%.
First Nations mums who breastfed could reduce the number of gastrointestinal infections their babies suffer by 41%.
As of 2011, the aboriginal population of Canada accounted for just over 4% of their population. In Australia, our aboriginal population, as of 2011, accounted for just over 3%.
