A lot of mamas are drawn to the idea of starting their own business. Whether it’s a way to make a little more money, a chance to turn a passion into a profit, or just a way to express themselves creatively, setting up a side hustle ranks high on a lot of moms’ wish lists. However, it can be hard to find the time to get started, with most of your day devoted to looking after your little ones.
Thankfully, the ever-increasing reach of social media has made it easier than ever before to be your own boss. There are now many ways to go into business, including options that will suit even the busiest of mamas.
A great example of someone who has made a successful side hustle is Australian mom of three, Lou Aldis (@_lifewithlou_). We caught up with her to discuss how she manages to bot look after her young family and grow her socials. Here’s some of what Lou shared…
How did Life With Lou get started?
It was initially just a chance for me to be a little creative. I love all things vintage and handmade, and after the birth of Hazel, my first daughter, I set up a sewing business called Little Haze. I wanted to share my pieces with other mamas, which led me to start a blog and setting up my Instagram.
I’ve since closed Little Haze, but I really enjoyed taking pictures of my family and posting creative, fun content, so I chose to keep working on my socials. My pages are now a mix of real stories and photos I love and are designed to celebrate every part of motherhood – from the highest of highs to the daily struggles we all face.
What are the biggest challenges you have you faced?
Thankfully I haven’t had too many issues, but finding the time is always a bit of a challenge. There are always DMs to reply to and emails to read, and generally, once I’ve put the kids to bed, I’m ready to call it a night. Getting the picture right can also be tough, particularly when the kids are involved, but we work it out!
What are your tips for other mompreneurs?
You need to be honest, creative, and love what you’re doing. Also, for us, getting the little ones involved is extremely important. In fact, many of the pictures I post were taken by Harrison, my eldest, who’s a real budding photographer.
What are your favorite things to do with the kids?
We’re quite an artsy family, and all enjoy being part of the creative process. We live on the Gold Coast, which is such a beautiful area, and the kids love going for walks and exploring the nearby bushland. We always come home with buckets full of ‘treasures’ which get used in all kinds of craft projects.
What’s your self-care routine?
I don’t really have one! We don’t get much time away from the kids, and when we do have a moment, there’s a long list of things we need to get through, so self-care has taken a bit of a back seat.
What have you been most surprised by?
Instagram has introduced me to a whole new community, and they’ve shown me so much support and kindness. There are so many lovely, beautiful people out there, and I’ve been able to make some great friends through my online platform.
I’m also so thankful that people are interested in our family and like what I’m doing. I have a lot of fun creating content, and it’s so fulfilling knowing that there are people who find it helpful.
